Meeting place Valle Vogna Sant’Antonio 10.00 a.m.
Our route starts from the superb Valley Vogna (Valsesia), with typical Walser villages (Walser are Germanic people who settled in many Alpine valleys during the Middle Ages) and green pastures, to reach the Alpe Larecchio: a beautiful grassy valley with a small alpine lake. Here you will spend the night in a mountain hut, known for its excellent food from local products and friendly welcome.
Alpe Larecchio - Ospizio Sottile-Gressoney Saint Jean
We will say goodbye to the friendly owners of mountain hut and we will start our walk. The path goes up the Valdobbia Pass (2480 m), the ancient road between Valsesia and Aosta Valley. Here we’ll reach the Ospizio Sottile, one of the oldest mountain huts in the Alps. Short stop to admire the beautiful panorama and then a long descent down to Gressoney Saint Jean – a small, lively mointain village with shops, bars and restaurants. Dinner and overnight.
Gressoney Saint Jean – Rifugio Sitten
From Gressoney Saint Jean the path goes up along the Lys Valley to Gressoney La Trinetè. We’ll take the path along the river and through pastures and meadows, we reach Sant’Anna oratory and then Sitten Refuge, so suggestive with its beautiful view over the glaciers and Monte Rosa, take a drink, sit down and admire the unforgettable panorama and the mountain animals – sheeps, cows and marmots.
Tasty dinner and overnight at the mountain hut.
Rifugio Sitten – Rifugio Gabiet
We descend along comfortable roads until Staffal, at the bottom of the Valle del Lys, before recovering on the opposite side of Lake Gabiet (2370 m). Here we will stop at the hut Gabiet “by Sandro” where superb cook famous for its delicious recipes from the old alpine traditions is waiting for us. Dinner, “grolla” ritual and overnight. Grolla is a typical drink served in a special wooden bowl made from coffee, grappa and local liquor.
Rifugio Gabiet – Alagna
The trail continues to the Salati pass, at 2980 meters, the highest elevation we will reach during the tour. The track is very easy, but this passage from the Valle del Lys to Valsesia will remain in your memory, with the superb views over the glaciers and close to the Regina Margherita Hut (4559 m), the highest hut in Europe. A final descent will take us back to Alagna into Valsesia, the greenest valley in Italy.
